When you start to get successful in your job search, you reap the benefits of achieving great results, making yourself known, being appreciated for the work you do, you know you're fast on the way of building a successful career for yourself.
There are few habits that successful professionals cultivate to reach their potential - and grow to levels they haven't previously thought of! At prathigna.com, we have tried to understand what those habits consist of, that you can harness to build a successful career and be a winner.
Focus on these eight steps to build a successful career, and whether your professional goal this year is getting a promotion at work or landing your dream job, you will be well on your way.
1. Make it a habit to set small goals for yourself
The moment annual reviews roll around, the talk of goals starts. Most of them are annual goals, but studies have shown that goals set for a smaller period of time are more successful as they are more tangible, achievable goals. Starting from day-to-day work, you need to figure out how to perform your best - what skills could you learn to help you advance?
The second part of setting goals - give yourself a deadline to achieve these goals - and when you reach it, grade yourself. Conduct a self-review - and to make it a memorable exercise, ask someone else how they would score or grade you on these new skills. Do this repeatedly; make it a successful habit.
2. Go beyond your comfort zone
The most successful people have one thing in common, in addition to other factors - they know success is just outside our comfort zone. To learn something new, add something valuable to your experience, you need to stretch beyond your area of expertise. It usually is something a little scary!
For most people, public speaking is a terrifying act, so one way you can incorporate it in your jobs is to volunteer for presentations at work or networking events. Once you are over the initial fear, you will experience this incredible feeling of having conquered a major fear! Similarly, in your business and career, be open to explore.
3. Get feedback from the right people
While self-assessment is essential to improving yourself personally & professionally, it is also important to get feedback. Especially at frequent and timely periods. At the end of every meeting, you can lead with the following questions: I happen to ask at the end of each and every meeting I lead with the following questions: "What did you learn that worked well for you?" and "What would you improve about it?" These two questions can give you a lot to work from, with relevance to your work product and performance. What worked and what could be improved - it's up to these two questions.
4. Learn more about your industry
Set aside regular time in your day and week to learn more about the industry you work in, and your company. Study your industry and company in terms of trends, current condition, factors affecting it both globally or locally. If need be, ask questions to experts in your company, discuss it with team members and colleagues. One way to judge ground level performance is to learn how your company's customers feel. Develop thoughtful insights about your company and don't be shy about sharing those insights. Maintain a blog or a journal to note what you learn! This improves you, your future interviews and promotes knowledge.
5. Read more books, articles
Spend time reading blogs big and small. Spend time reading books about your profession. Read business books that stretch your thinking. But at the end of the day read. By reading new things, you can start great conversations when you're networking and can also build your own career with new ways to do things and different work and life hacks to make life flow a little more smoothly. Reading can always impact your work life for the better.
6. Increase & improve your networking!
When using LinkedIn always make sure to personalize your message to tell the recipient what you need from them and how you can help them as well. If you do not know someone, you can always ask to be introduced by a common member of your network. Networking brilliantly is about leaving a positive impression. And it isn't limited to LinkedIn, make sure to attend industry events, local events, alumni meet and interact with as many people as you can. Not only will this give you a fair idea of your industry but increases your exposure to real time events that can have an impact on your future in this industry.
7. Get a mentor
Someone to guide you and keep you abreast of industry events, trends and help with their own insight is a great way to establish yourself in your career. Mentors are great resources when it comes to all of these elements, and one can move forward at a much faster rate when there is expert guidance in this matter. Be on the lookout and network with senior staff at various companies, or family acquaintances, to find your mentor!
8. Always be learning! Listen & learn
The biggest asset to a successful person is the ability to listen and learn. To experts, to other successful achievers, and indeed, to your own instinct. Even if you are really happy in your current role, it always pays off to reap benefits from other opportunities and build relationships with new people in the industry. One can never be sure of the future, but preparing yourself for the best version of you will always get you noticed, and put you squarely in the path of success and a great career!
